The Laboratory Animal Service Center
The Laboratory Animal Service Center (LASC) at CMU facilitates the humane care and use of laboratory animals in research and teaching and follows the Animal Protection Law by the council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan and the Animal Welfare Act using Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) to review research protocols and conducts evaluations of the institution's animal care and use in compliance with the principles of the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement). LASC holds regular meetings and supervise related affairs as well as monitor the operation of equipment and software in compliance with the policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. The facility provides the research staff and students with the highest quality laboratory animal care, support services and high standards of animal health and welfare are maintained and regularly monitored and examined. LASC offers teachings and assistance in appropriate methods of animal husbandry, handling and care.
The LASC is divided into two districts: one is located on the 2nd and the 3rd floor of the Laboratory Building, with the total space of 1,583 square feet. On the 2nd floor, there are general area, surgery area, and rabbit house. On the 3rd floor, the front area is for clean and conventional rooms, the back area is for specific-pathogen free rooms where the specific-pathogen free and immunodeficiency mice are fed in individually ventilated caging (IVC) systems. The other district is located on the 10th floor of Cancer Center Building of China Medical University Hospital and the space of the animal house is about 900 square feet and is divided into Clean Conventional area and Specific pathogen free area.
